First off, what an absolutely insane eye-opening weekend. I can't believe how much fun I had at this festival, the amazing people I got to spend my time with, the INCREDIBLE shows, the feeling that you can only really receive from live music. Me? I thrive on it. Music soothes the wild Savage, generally any genre. This weekend changed my life. Is that weird? Nah.
Last year I highly considered going to Rifflandia, but I was struggling so much with anxiety it was just not possible. So I didn't. This year I impulsively bought my weekend pass, stepped back, and wondered if I could handle it. But I decided to give it a try.
I themed my outfits for different days.
I think that clothing in itself should make a statement, your appearance should be an art project. So Day One, I was Death To The Peacock. The hat was my signature apparel for almost the entire weekend, and people loved it!
So Day One started in the evening.
I don't know how many people know this about me but I am passionately drug and alcohol-free. Today I'm actually celebrating nine months sober! Generally in social situations that lead to anxiety, I would turn to booze but nope. I was spending this whole weekend with nothing but coffee and cigarettes (hey, everybody's gotta have something...)
I was initially a little disappointed with my first Rifflandia night. The night venues were interesting for sure. A friend and I checked out a DJ that was playing in a parking lot, a larger venue. It wasn't our scene, it was 9PM, and our friends were playing a show at 11:30 and we wanted to make sure we caught it, so we got in line for the venue they were playing at. We watched two bands before them, who ROCKED it.
At 9:30 we caught The Pistolwhips
And at 10:30 was Coleman Hell
At one point we wanted to smoke a cigarette and there was no designated smoking area. It seemed it was an impossibility. We could have left the venue and gotten back in line, but the line was stretched to the end of the block and the venue was at capacity. We would have missed the show. Bummer. It seemed to go like this for the entirety of the night venues for Rifflandia. Venues hit capacity quick - this is a warning for next year, get to the show early!
So then my friend and I decided to get a good spot at the front of the stage to watch SPACEBOOTS play and I'm so glad we were right up front.
These guys always put on a RIDICULOUS and amazing show. Here's a video shot by Shane Deringer Photography that kiiiind of gives you an idea of what these guys are like. You can maybe even spot my hat there ...
This show was what I was looking forward to and I loved every second of it. Spaceboots know how to put on a great show, involve the audience, and draw a fanbase. Seriously, check them out. Here's a link to their newest YouTube video, Sunday Funday
After their show, night one was done and so was I. The cool part about sobriety is that I can always take my car to shows! So I drove my friend home and I got myself a peppermint tea and went to go sit at the beach wondering how Day Two was going to go ...
